Garden- Growing tomatoes

We have 7 different types of heirloom tomatoes growing in our homemade pots and reused cardboard egg cartons. Does anyone know roughly how many lbs a tomato plant produces? This year I plan on canning diced tomatoes, homemade spaghetti sauce, tomato paste (is that possible?), tomato sauce and salsa so we need some serious poundage.

Wondering what that gravel looking stuff is on the bottom of the tray?

There have been questions about how to grow tomatoes and why some can not get their tomatoes to germinate. Tomatoes need warm soil to grow and right now although we live in SE coastal GA, we still have very cold/frosty soil. Your best bet is to start them indoors and plant them outside in either a pot or your garden beds around April, don't quote me on that though.

This "warm soil" method is cheap and effective. You want to use outdoor lights only, kitty litter and a clear bin. First add a layer, maybe an inch or so of kitty litter then place your lights however you need then add another layer of kitty litter about two to three inches, make sure the lights are covered. I used 3 bags of kitty litter. This will provide the warmth needed to help germinate your seeds.

If you haven't purchased seeds head over to Botanical Interests, they have a wonderful selections of tomatoes.

Do you have any tips or tricks to help you tomatoes grow?
