January To Do

It's gardening time!!

So I planted the lettuce and Swiss chard that was getting to leggy for my taste today. I'm hoping that the transplant shock wont get to them. I have about 4 more of these Swiss Chard seedlings. We never ate Swiss Chard before so I don't want to plant too much. Anyone try these before?

Planning and Purchase:
By now you should be knees deep in planning your garden. Try this Free garden planner for 30 days, let me tell you it is amazingly helpful. Look into buying organic and Heirloom seeds from a reputable seed company. if you haven't already. Start finding long sticks and twine to make your pea and bean trellis.

Sow indoors:
Depending on what you plan to grow but for our area (coastal GA) you want to start a few of these

  •  Basil
  • Cabbage
  • Cauliflower
  • Celery
  • Eggplant
  • Lettuce
  • Leek
  • Peppers
  • Tomatoes (these need warm soil so keep them under a light for 10+ hours and a heat mat (check out this DIY heat mat
  • Herbs

Sow outdoors:

  • Peas- make sure you've got your trellis or tepee up before you plant (It'll make things easier when you're busy in the garden).
  • Spinach
  • Radish- these babies are the cure all of LOTS of bugs, you'll be planting lots and lots so buy a few packets of seeds
  • Raspberries
  • Blueberries
  • Grapes
Just keep in mind about fruit bushes (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and grapes), you need to pick off the flowers so they do not produce fruits the first year. The first year it needs to focus on growing deep healthy roots not producing fruits. So even though it may be tempting to let fruits grow, don't! You want them produce a large yield year after year.

Transplant:
If you are like me and already have lettuce up and growing you might need to transplant them later in this month.
Harvest:
Nothing yet

Feed:
You want to feed your flowers and flower bushes and add nutrients to your soil middle to late part of the month.
